Our Curriculum
At Scargill Junior School, our curriculum is both inclusive and progressive. It is designed to support learners in their journey from KS1 to secondary education, through experiences which harness their intellectual curiosity and natural enthusiasm, whilst nurturing their self-esteem, confidence, resilience and well-being. We believe that all learners are entitled to an education that equips them with the knowledge, skills and values they need in order to embrace the opportunities, experiences and challenges they encounter; preparing them for a future that they want to live in.
It is our intent to deliver a curriculum that:
- Equips all pupils with the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics to ensure they are adequately prepared for secondary school.
- Enables pupils to understand who they are and the world in which they inhabit.
- Engages pupils with thinking about the values, ideas and objects that help to shape our lives.
- Facilitates meaningful links between subjects.
- Inspires curiosity where pupils know what they are learning about, why and want to know more.
- Celebrates our local history, geography and demography.
- Exposes pupils to ambitious vocabulary.
We do this by:
- Ensuring that our subjects are coherently planned and sequenced.
- Using carefully chosen, high-quality texts in all areas of the curriculum.
- Enriching knowledge and understanding with well-planned visits and visitors.
- Using knowledge from the local community.
- Making our classrooms book rich environments.
- Ensuring that lessons are tailored to meet the needs of all pupils.
- Making lessons enjoyable, engaging and fun.
- Re-visiting ideas and building upon them.
- Creating opportunities for character development.
