Our Curriculum

At Scargill Junior School it is our intent to deliver a curriculum that ....

  • Equips all pupils with the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics to ensure that pupils are adequately prepared for the transition from KS2 to KS3.
  • Enables children to understand who they are and the world in which they inhabit.
  • Engages pupils with thinking about the values, ideas and objects that help to shape our lives.
  • Facilitates meaningful links between subjects.
  • Inspires curiosity where pupils know what they are learning about, why and want to know more.
  • Celebrates our local history, geography and demography.
  • Exposes pupils to ambitious vocabulary.

We do this by ......

  • Ensuring that our subjects are coherently planned and sequenced.
  • Using carefully chosen, high-quality texts in all areas of the curriculum.
  • Enriching knowledge and understanding with well-planned visits and visitors.
  • Using knowledge from the local community.
  • Making our classrooms book rich environments.
  • Ensuring that lessons are tailored to meet the needs of all pupils.
  • Making lessons enjoyable, engaiging and fun.
  • Creating opportunities for character development.

The impact will be that our pupils ...

  • Can clearly articulate what they are learning about and why it is important.
  • Are engaged with their learning.
  • Have a love of reading that in turn enables them to make accelerated progress.
  • Achieve in line with or above government expectations.
  • Have a keen interest in the wider world and a thirst for knowledge.
  • Have a good understanding of the local area and how it came to be.
  • Have developed positive character traits and a moral and ethical compass required to navigate our increasingly complex world
